The Play

The Lying Kind

by Anthony Neilson

directed by Geoffrey Kent

Running Time: 1:40 with no intermission

It’s Christmas Eve and two constables have the unpleasant task of telling an elderly couple their daughter has been killed in a motor accident. That’s a most unlikely start for a holiday farce, but so it goes. The Lying Kind is full of bad news and good cheer—it’s the warmest black comedy THEATREWORKS has ever produced, and also the most fun. It’s being restaged at the Dusty Loo Bon Vivant Theater, December 4-21.

Antony Neilson’s play premiered during the 2002 holiday season at the Royal Court in London, a theatre world famous for creating adventurous and ground breaking new drama. The Lying Kind makes farce out of truly un-funny material, and yet, astonishingly, it succeeds brilliantly. The two English constables with their bad news are so kind hearted they can’t quite get round to telling the nice old couple at #58 exactly what’s happened. The mother has a severe case of dementia; the father has a very weak heart. Complications ensue. Other characters appear, including a ferocious huntress of pedophiles. There’s a Chihuahua. Very soon the two well-meaning officers are completely over their heads; their difficulties and confusion are compounding by the second.  We’re not in London anymore—we’re in the land of simple merriment and pure farce. Will it end happily after everything goes horribly wrong? Well of course—mostly.

The Lying Kind contains strong language.
