In honor of March Madness, THEATREWORKS has developed a new game--play our bracket to determine which play is Shakespeare's best!
Your opponent: Stephen Booth (one of the smartest, most well regarded Shakespeareans in the world)
The game: download our Shakespeare Bracket and go head-to-head with Stephen as he reveals The Best Play Shakespeare Ever Wrote!
The prize: bragging rights (duh), a bust of the Bard (no joke), and drinks with Drew and Murray before our Shakespeare Festival this summer.
How to play: download this form, fill it out, send it back to us (email or snail mail) by TUESDAY, MARCH 26 and then wait (with baited breath) to find out which play will reign supreme. We'll be announcing it on Facebook and on our website (we'll email you if you win).
(According to Stephen Booth.)
We have one clear winner, and two runner ups. We'll contact the winners and then post the results on our Facebook Page.
We have a Shakespeare champion, and it may come as no surprise, since it parallels the results of this year’s NCAA tournament, where Louisville began as the #1 favorite, and ended by winning it all. You might say the same for Hamlet, which Professor Stephen Booth declares the #1 Shakespeare play, after defeating Macbeth in a hard fought and bloody final battle—there were bodies all over the court when the tournament ended, with only Malcolm, Horatio and Fortinbras eligible for another season.
Hamlet wins, because as Professor Booth says, it ”Presents a real blizzard of confusions and contradictions which an audience effortlessly absorbs.” For a more detailed elaboration of this rationale, you might read Booth’s celebrated essay, “On the Value of Hamlet” which remains a landmark of modern Shakespeare criticism.
Artistic Director Murray Ross, in agreement with his former mentor, says more simply, “Hamlet really was the inevitable winner. All the characters are wonderful opportunities for actors, each scene is full of excitement and surprise, and the title character is the role every actor would most love to play.” The play’s the thing, and Hamlet is THE play!
THEATREWORKS is where actors, audiences, scholars, directors and designers come together to think about and create classic and contemporary theatre.
