A Midsummer Night's Dream
by William Shakespeare
directed by Murray Ross
There’s a moon out tonight, and it’s shining on lovers, clowns, and fairies hip-hopping through the enchanted woods. An entirely new look at Shakespeare’s most extravagant, magical and best loved play, presented in an ideal setting at Rock Ledge Ranch.
The trees surrounding the festival tent are an ideal setting for the play, according to THEATREWORKS artistic director, Murray Ross. “The play tells the story of one dreamy, wild and hilarious night in the enchanted woods,” he says, “and at Rock Ledge nature has given us all we need to work with, including a blue moon on our second performance.” Midsummer has proved itself the most resilient of Shakespeare’s comedies, easily adapting itself both to traditional ballet and radically different locales: a mud pit, a white box, a prep school. That’s not surprising, Ross says, since “this is a play about people being transformed—through magic, through love, and through art.” Our production will feature contemporary costumes, and the fairies are likely to be seen hip hopping through the woods. It’s a very funny and very sexy play, and its confusions and passions are recognizably modern as well as classic. The play is so popular that it’s almost in danger of being too well known, Ross says, “so we want to create a world that is absolutely true to the play while also making it new and fresh again.”
